As with many good things in life, Living in Truth resulted from a conversation between friends.
After the momentous theological shift of The Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC) in 2019 to become an officially affirming denomination and its adoption of parallel definitions of marriage in 2021, many evangelicals wondered about their future. We gathered in person and online. We shared and lamented. We had new dreams. Some departed, others remained. Amidst the upheaval and uncertainty was a growing hunger and thirst for community and a sharing of news and information.
Since the demise of Channels, the magazine published by the Renewal Fellowship (RF), there hasn’t been a rich publication for evangelical Presbyterians. The quarterly Renewal News was never intended to be more than a newsletter for that organization and its supporters. Presbyterians Standing for Apostolic Love and Truth (PSALT) and RF had their websites, which served their purposes. The Presbyterian Record was a fine publication and provided a platform for a wide array of voices and views within the PCC. Sadly, its demise left a gaping hole. Presbyterian Connection was the denomination’s answer to that void, but unlike the Presbyterian Record – which recognized RF and would have provided coverage of Living Stones: A Movement of Reformed Churches in Canada had it remained alive – it’s not journalism. It’s an official voice of the PCC, and unless you are directly accountable to a session, presbytery, synod, or General Assembly, you don’t exist.
Add to this the realization that PSALT and RF were pretty much on the same page and their memberships were almost identical. Put this together, and you get a renewed call. It took two former news hounds to propose a remedy. Rev. Paul Johnston (PSALT) and Rev. Andy Cornell (RF) have backgrounds in the news business. Out of a conversation came support from their respective organizations to plan something new. The conversation engaged a wider group of kindred souls, one of whom remarked about the need for “A wonderfully evangelical publication.”
What you see on this site is the collaborative work of Andy, Paul, and the organizing team of Glynis Faith (Living Stones), Jon Wyminga (Living Stones), Sandy Copland Dufour (RF), Jinsil Park (RF) and Philip MacFie (RF).
Living in Truth is a new voice for a new era. We’re not PSALT. We’re not RF. We’re not Living Stones. Rather, the soul of Living in Truth consists of DNA from each of those groups.
We hope to widen that group even further to include anyone who embraces an evangelical, reformed witness no matter where they come from or where they gather.
I’m a past supporter of the Renewal Fellowship, have just come across your website, and would be glad if I could be kept apprised of you and your work by e-mail.
